An HDTV Buyer’s Guide

Television just keeps getting better and better. One of the newest updates is High Definition Television. HDTV is known for great picture quality and aspect ratio. It is more like watching a movie in the movie theater than at home on your TV. So, if you are ready for the TV-watching experience of your life, the first thing you need to do is to decide whether or not HDTV is for you.

When making this decision there are some things to keep in mind. One is whether or not you are happy with your television's picture or if you would like something brighter and clearer. The next is whether or not you are ready for the cost or if you would rather wait a year or two until the prices have gone down. You also need to check into whether or not the HDTV services in your area include all or most of your favorite TV programs and channels.

If you do decide to upgrade to HDTV the next step is to educate yourself on all of the different options available to you. One of the first options that you will need to consider is screen size. If you have a television cabinet or entertainment center that you would like to keep then you need to make sure that you choose an HDTV set that will fit in the TV cabinet. If that is not something that is important to you then you will need to base your screen-size choice on the size of your TV room. If you have a smaller TV room then you may not want to choose a larger set; if you do, you will end up sitting too close to the TV in proportion to its size and you may feel like you are sitting in one of the front seats at the movie theater.

Television type is another consideration to make. If you choose to go with the traditional "tube" set then you will most likely get more TV for your money and good color. Flat-panel sets are more expensive but they are not as bulky and have more of a theater quality picture. Rear-projection sets are well-priced and if you choose the right one you will get good color and picture quality. Front-projection sets are high-cost but they have bright colors and good picture quality.

Next, you will want to choose which type of HDTV service is best for you. The type of service that you choose will depend on where you live and which aspects of HDTV and which add-ons are the most important to you. For example, if you live in a rural area the services that you can choose from may be limited to satellite if cable and over-the-air are not available in your area. If programming is the most important to you then you may want to go with cable or satellite since over-the-air is often limited to basic cable channels. If the clarity of the picture is what you are most interested in then cable may not be the best choice because the picture can be blotchy. If you are planning on getting a Digital Video Recorder box (DVR), then you should check to see which services in your area offer it.

Price is another thing to take into consideration. Cable can be costly. Satellite is a good monthly value but there can be a lot of equipment to purchase. Over-the-air is the least expensive. There are often times no monthly costs once the antenna has been installed.

HDTV is the new frontier in television services. There are a lot of options to consider but it may be well worth the effort if you are looking for a great TV-watching experience.
